Hey guys,

Well, I'm all switched over to Vertexhost. You guys were right, Vertexhost is awesome, the best host I've ever been with, and thats really saying something considering I've been with dozens and dozens of different hosting providers over the years.

This question is in regards to backup. After my last 2 bad hosting experiences, not that I don't trust Vertexhost, but you never know the worst could always happen, like me my old FusionBB board was deleted twice. After having to reapply all the mods, trying to get people back to post to no avail, I finally just gave up on it. Wasn't worth the effort I was putting into it when nobody would at least come for a visit.

Now I just have a blog up, which I don't want to loose either. Maybe someday I'll put the Forum back up, if I get enough interest. I'm not going to put it back up if I get 0 visitors again, or a few visitors who don't come back twice

my question is, as some of you know, vertexhost uses cpanel. Umm.. how do I generate regular backups that I can download to my HDD? WIth my luck, I was thinking a good .tar.gz backup of all my files, directories, mysql db's and setting, about once a week, just in case the worst happens to me again. I even have an external hard drive to put them on..

How do I do it is my question? As long as I've had cpanel hosting you'd think I'd know, but I always did it before thru the automated crohn job system thru WHM to a separate "off site" backup location they provided to me, which wasn't the smartest idea I found out because the off-site backup was owned by the hosting provider too, so if my site does get deleted for any reason, like the last time they went out of business, the off-site backups will too, so I figure its better to download them here to my external HD or something, what do you guys think?

I believe VH do their own backups several times a day but I regularly backup my db's via cpanels backup feature. I do a less regular backup of my home directory using the same feature. It doesn't allow you to specify folders so it's all or nothing.

How will you get interest or visitors before you put a forum up?

Judging by your posts here, you seem quite engaged by technology issues, web hosting etc - may a tech chat forum? Maybe from a blind persons perspective? Technology & disabilities?

VertexHost has saved my butt on a couple of occasions so I can say their backups are excellent. I also use the cpanel backup, but I'm doing it less now because I have to conserve bandwidth since I'm on an air card instead of an unlimited dsl plan.

yeah I've been thinking about that. I could include other disabilities too besides blindness, like for the deaf and paraplegics. That could get some interest.. course I'd have to check into how accessible FusionBB actually is, but it could be doable perhaps. I could always make a category for questions regarding accessibility not just in technology but websites as well, yeah thats a good idea I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the idea.

cool, now I know who to ask about air card installation issues. My mom has a verizon aircard, and she's been fussing with it lately, getting it to connect and all that. She lives out past New Haven. Its still considered New Haven, but there's a sign next to her house that says "welcome to ohio" lol so she can't get HSI where she's at.

As for the topic at hand, well if its in cpanel I'll check there, but I didn't see it before, thanks guys. Yeah I kinda figured VH had their own backups, which is good that'll probably save my butt too, but you never know the worst could always happen.

Just as an example, I remember before when I had a FBB forum up, after I applied a couple of mod's, I'd go to the main forum to a blank screen, so I was like "ok I must've screwed up somewhere" so I applied the mod's again, and finally got it to work after a couple of tries, but if it wasn't for backups, I would have lost the forum. whewwwww. lol

W&N,

The backups at Vertex are great, they've saved me on many occasions. But for an extra level of security, I would generate a Backup and download it yourself, to retain on your own machine. This way you'll never lose your site.

From within Cpanel you can generate a Full Backup and download it. A full backup includes all of the files in your home directory, your MySQL Databases, and your email forwarders and filters.

HiYa..

This is one area that I do have some insight & knowledge that I can pass on gladly. Having run many different forum scripts over the years and having ran my own hosting business , its a question I have been asked many a time...
So here goes..

To backup your mysql database and download the file to your PC or to another remote storage area,
Try MYSQLDumper available here:
Code:

 http://www.mysqldumper.net/

You can download any and all tables or select just certain ones , by doing so you can merge backups into your live databse. Very handy at times...

To backup folders & files anywhere try looking at this script , Ultimate PHP Site Backup v2 it is not free but the $17 is well spent for peace of mind...
Code:

 http://codecanyon.net/item/ultimate-php-site-backup-v10/faq/96705

Hope this helps someone..

Regards...

Hi guys,.
My preference is always for local backup. Then only you are responsible for your data - some things you need to learn and take responsibility for.
