I had a FusionBB license until I had web hosting provider issues, they deleted my site and all my off-site backups, after being a couple days late on my bill, when I moved to a different city last year, and had to change banks and paypal accounts.

I agree they should have suspended it instead of deleting it, but its long gone now

and with all the mod's required for couchtomatoe's premium mod's, I've just been too lazy to put it back up, but have been thinking about it.

Since they deleted my site, I switched to a shared hosting solution called hastyhost. Since then, hastyhost went out of business and moved everyone over to a host called XE solutions, who I have been extremely unhappy with.

Right now, because of the Glaucoma loosing my sight completely now, my site just consists of a wordpress blog, so I didn't think any host could mess up an account with just a wordpress blog on it, boy was I wrong...

I've been unable to upgrade wordpress via the admin interface, as well as the plugins, because the host doesn't have suPHP installed, or whatever that module is that allows files from owner to be written to a directory with 755 permissions. RIght now I have to set wp-content to 777 to get wordpress to upgrade automatically, which is annoying, and a security risk.

is this vertexhost a fairly knowledgeable company with reasonable prices? I'm unemployed on disability, so I don't have alot of money to spend on a hosting provider, but I want someone "good" too, ya know?

whichever host I choose, rather its vertex or someone else, there are a couple of issues I'm faced with.

I am on Medicaid, and they watch my bank account closely to qualify for food stamps. I'm also on HUD, the local housing authority, who they also check my bank account closely.

Therefore, I cannot use my bank account to pay for web hosting, because they would see that and take that amount off my food stamps every month. It sucks, but until I can find employment, its the best I can do. I've been trying to locate dental insurance too, but thats yet another hassle.

Since I don't have credit to be accepted for a credit card (probably a good thing) in the past I've used a debit card, which I would never give to a hosting provider, or paypal, in the first place due to security reasons. I had my wallet stolen over the holiday season as it was. Can you believe someone would steal a wallet from a blind man on christmas??

so normally what I do, to get around Medicaid's crazy requirements, is I setup a paypal account with one of those temporary VISA cards on it from walmart. Thats about the only way I can pay for things online without Medicaid and the housing authority getting all crappy with me about it.

so whoever I choose, I'll have to pay by year, with a paypal account, otherwise I could pay by money order, but would be more of a hassle. A yearly payment I can write off as a gift, while a monthly fee they would take out of my food stamps as income its really stupid.

If you're on a budget why not search out a free service to start with & build on that? If you get plenty visitors you could maybe ask for paypal donations which you could use for upgrading your hosting when the need arises.

I can't recommend them for bigger sites or rapid response to technical issues but for smaller sites you could try http://www.crosswinds.net/.

They offer a cheap hosting & a free package & are very nice people. They are a small company - maybe just 3 people with a nice bunch of volunteers on their support forum.

It was a wrench to leave their hosting after around 7 years but as we got bigger I needed more reliabilty for my main site & quicker response to any issues. My smaller sites always worked just fine.

VertexHost's starter system is only $6.95 per month and like has already been stated, their tech support is the best in the business.

ok, when I tried to sign up, it says "that email address is already in use"

how can that be?? unless its linked to my existing FusionBB license....I haven't renewed my FBB license yet, but I still have one. How do I sign up for this starter hosting plan then?

I haven't decided if I want to put FusionBB back up or not. If I get some interest I will, but it was so dead before I just don't know if its worth it. I'll have to think about what kind of forum I want if I do that will spark interest in people.

Wow, Josh was right, I was a Vertexhost customer way back when. *shrugs* so much for my memory and the air left in it. lol

btw: for those who had me on facebook before, and got deleted, I apologize for that, it wasn't intentional.
