I'm trying to order the replies to a post so that the most recent is at the top. I've tried lots of selections (last post date ascending/descending and others), both in the Admin area Manage Forums and right there at the topic.

No matter what I do, the chronologically first post reply is always at the top, followed by the replies with the most recent at the bottom. Makes for lots of scrolling.

What to do?

I might be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure you can't sort a topic. You CAN sort a forum's topics by date, but within a topic, the post order can't be changed.

If you want it to jump to the most recent reply since your last visit, you CAN do that by enabling Auto Jump to New Posts which is in your personal control panel under Display Settings.

That should help with the scrolling.

Hmmm...velly intellesting. Then why are there sort options for this? Or, perhaps our friendly neighborhood developers could wire this option into the program?

It seems to me that when going to a topic with several posts, people would most want to see the more recent at the top...especially if they're regulars...

BTW, I do have Auto Jump to New Posts checked -- I think it's the default -- but I haven't yet noticed what it does.

Since most of us read "top to bottom" when viewing a list, it makes more sense to put the new posts at the bottom. That way, you jump to the first new post and scroll down. If the new posts are at the top, and there are several of them, you're reading them in reverse order.

There aren't options to sort posts. It's only within the forum display to sort topics.

At the forum level, change the sort order, you'll see it in action.

what would be handy is if the posts that are not new were "collapsed or hidden" so you don't have to paginate or scroll as much and a way to toggle expand all or expand not new... I know when viewing a 327 reply Private Topic its even more frustrating. -

In situations where one stumbles onto many replies and has to catch up, yes. But I run a forum with a much smaller number of posters, and reading the newest at the top -- with maybe a quick perusal of a few older in reverse chronological order -- would work better.
