The other missing text seems to have been resolved reloading the language files as per this post but this issue remains.

See my reply to your other thread here. Those are missing language strings. The permissions are displaying the options for you - because the dots are there, but the text that actually makes the link is missing. That's either the showuser.php language file, or the common.php language file.

Ok - checked the source of the user page & could see the blank strings so copied the common.php across from the install folder. This has fixed the problem - but...
I appreciate what you've said in the past about copying stuff over via ftp a bit at a time. While I was copying the file across I did a cross reference of the php files in the language/english folder on my server & the same folder in the install section of the install files.
Apart from common.php there are other files in there that have different file sizes. Some examples;
age_verification.php
delmycookies.php
There are loads of others. Is that ok or have I got other problems I haven't come across yet?

With the above in mind is it better perhaps to do a clean install & then update the database?
My current test site is an upgrade from 2.3

As long as you make sure you are getting all the files uploaded, and have backed up any files you have customized so as to not overwrite, say a custom template or other changes, you should be OK with the preferred method of just uploading the files.

Thanks Greg - I may perservere with the upgrade but the annoying thing is even if I set my ftp client to overwrite it never seems to as evidenced by my issues!
I need clarifiction re the differing files sizes before I go any further as I'm getting some wierd issues which may be down to this. If the differences shouldn't be there I may just do a clean install & redo the customisation, rather than go through checking every file.
I keep a file of my changes (well most of them!) but with a big upgrade like 3 some of them need redoing anyway so best to compare before keeping old custom files. EG I have my lightbox open full size rather than resize to browser window but the alterations to achieve that are in a completely different place in V3 compared to V2.3

if you are comparing the file size on your local drive of files compared to file size on your server there may be a difference because each may calculate the sizes differently but as long as your sure you uploaded all the files you should be good.. what I usually do from time to time is download all the files from my server to my PC then delete all files that would be uploaded.. now the ones likes pics but the php files and then upload.. this way I am sure all files have been uploaded.. not for the faint of heart

Some are the same - many are way different. What if I downloiad from the server then compare.
I have some weird isses that may not be bugs but issues with incomplete or old files.
How can you be sure the files uploaded? I thought they had as I chose overwrite & got no reported errors - just problems cos things hadn't written properly.

sb1963, I use FileZilla, a free program, and it not only allows you to queue files for each folder, at the bottom of the screen it tells you how many files you have in the queue, but how many were actually uploaded. I had similar problems not getting all the files uploaded with a couple of other ftp programs, but when I switched to FileZilla that cured the problem.

Know it & use on Linux & XP. Coincidently starting using it the same time as FBB so I don't know which is giving me problems! I'm also on a server tuned for FBB. I always get something that doesn't 'write' when doing an upgrade or install but never get any error messages from Filezilla or the installer!
I have a licence for WS_ftp pro so may go back to that on my XP partition - I never used to have these problems. I only moved to Filezilla as I mostly migrated to Linux.

I use CuteFTP myself anyways.. yeah you could always copy the files back from your server and then run something like Beyond Compare to make sure both directories have the same exact files.. I think that's where a lot of people are failing.. they think they are uploading all the files but for pne reason or another its not..

I've also had very little problems with the latest few releases of FileZilla which is free and cross platform compatible.
I've had a lot of customers at VH have problems that we tracked down to WS_FTP.

I even purchased WS_FTP PRO and scrapped it after finding Filezilla. I was having constant problems with WS_FTP timing out, not uploading all the files, etc.
