The biggest changes are those made to the blogging system and how it functions, etc.
I'll let Couch jump in here with more detailed info.
Some of the other changes, including the upgraded mailer function are listed here:

Hi,
Thanks. I had read the changelog, but seeing it hasn't been updated in months I was wondering if there was anything additional.

I've completed 2 upgrades now and with the exception of a file corruption problem, most likely caused during upload of the install folder on one site, all went well without a hitch. I'll try the other 3 sites tomorrow, but right now I don't really see any issues with the upgrade utility. If I get a chance, I'll do a clean install and see what happens.

OH YEAH! Probably at least 4 times faster. That's probably one of the best changes made in it. I know in the past we were trying to keep a lot out of the DB so it didn't get so large, but man, we were really starting to take a performance hit on upgrades. Thanks!

That's it?
Running smooth? I'm still running a rock solid 2.1 and need some convincing.

If you have a lot of hosted images - I had over 40k - it can be a long process - but that's due to the new directory structure FBB employs & the need for the script to move the images to make use of it. From memory this step is optional - you don't have to use the new structure but maybe one of the staffers can confirm?
The install goes first which was a breeze - then the move gallery image script - fast or slow depending on your image payload. Going forward it's back to a simple upgrade with less issues as more is now held in the db I believe.
I was on 2.3 & didn't like 3 but on balance I'm glad I made the jump to 3.1. There were a few bugs & some minor ones still to sort but just minor things. Couch posted a load of fixed in a zip file here.

I've done like a TON of 3.1 upgrades in the last two weeks. It's pretty much all I've done... lately. And the good news is they are running quite well.
I did have one very large site that had some performance issues - which was linked back to some indexes in MySQL that needed to be fixed or created. Once we tracked those down, it's run really well as well.

Josh,
You are the reason I am using Fusion, I recall you doing work for me on my old Threads site. I've always trusted you with my forums.
If you say its a good version I have total faith in that. I like seeing that you are taking a more active role in the fore front around here.
I have to be honest my partners are giving me crap for not going with that other famous brand.
I'm really interested in upgrading if its stable.
I'm looking for RSS channels to export. Is that very dependable? Do you have any examples of that on this site? I'd like to be able to export an RSS feed on a forum basis as well, is that possible?
Can you point me to a single post that covers all all the features of 3.1?
Thanks,
Tony

One of the reasons I am asking is that I was trying to get it going on a forum basis on 2.1 and keep coming up with errors.
The requested URL /fusionbb/rss/fid87.xml was not found on this server.
I did get the recent topic RSS feed working though so I know the basic plumbing works.
I looked at the knifeforum site which is running 3.1 Final and found a forum sharing a feed and its getting the same error about a missing xml file. Sooo I thought that is might be an issue with sharing forum feeds.
Where is that list of all the features in 3.1?
....missing xml file ....

I checked the same forum - I saw two feeds - one worked, one didn't.

I guess I have to read all the Change logs from 2.1 on to get a total picture of the changes.
I saw a post where a site was down for a week during the upgrade. I'm hoping this was an extreme case.
Here's the million dollar question.
What's the guess on an upgrade time from 2.1 to 3.1 1 with 1.7M posts and 60K users and 5000 uploaded files (Vertex dedicated server)?

My site was down for 8 days or thereabouts. The actual upgrade was quick & easy (& will be easier again now so many more bugs are fixed)
The killer was the movement of the images by the 'fix gallery script' that builds the new directory structure & moves the gallery images into it. (Ordinary forum images aren't moved)
I had nearly 50,000 images but from memory only 30 odd thousand were gallery images. With 5000 I'd guess at a day or less on a dedicated server. I don't know if the post count makes a big difference.
I think the image move may be optional - Couch?
