If nothing else I would be very willing to pitch in for someone to make the pda templates way better. Not being very smart phone friendly is pushing users on a lot of forums to FB just because it is so much easier to post there from the phone.

Aye, same sentiment here. Small template is increasingly important & currently not up to the mark.

I am the one that originally modified the template for the small screen. I am not a coder but I got a pretty good clue how they worked back then.
That was a long time ago and I looked at them a week ago and they all looked greek to me now since I haven't really messed with any mods in a long time. The last couple of days I have dove into them and they are looking much, much better. Once I get them done I will post them here or somewhere. When they are a little closer I will put them on my test site and put a link here so you all can give opinions and help. I'm sure I will need it.

I'm tired of reading posts like the one below on FB. 
"I am a DD member but to be honest I only go to that site about once a week. It is not all that easy to use with my iPhone so I come to this forum far more often. If DD was in a smart phone format I would go to that site every day. Ease of use is the #1 determining factor."
The "DD" he is talking about is my site.

The issue I have is the stylesheet.css needs to be changed for the small screen version. The reason is because of the font size needs to be changed on most everything. What I did was point that template to a pda skin so it doesn't affect the regular site templates. The only thing wrong with that is not everyone uses the same skins so they will have to edit the skin to match their site.
What I did was to just make a copy of my skin and renamed it to *skinname*pda and edit that. Anyway I don't know if the one on the test site needs to be the professional skin since that is what the test site is or if I just need to blank it out so people can add their colors or what. I'm thinking that the best way to do it might be just creating a stylesheetpda.css in the original skin folder and when switching to the small screen have it switch to that but I'm not sure if that is possible.
Oh and I also heard back from the Tapatalk people this morning. They don't have a plugin for Fusionbb but we can have one made. They said the price for a developer to do it would be between 2k and 4k. I can throw some money at it but not that much.

I can contribute some too. I need to look at Tapatalk as my knowledge isn't great on pda/smartphone web access/use
I've been on some sites that auto-detect when being accessed from a smart phone & change the template to suit. That would be good - save having to change manually via the CP.

Here is where I am at right now. The colors are the same as ddc.
I should have it set up to where everyone can see it and make posts. If I start getting spam I will have to make it where one has to register.
Go to it with your phone and click on the pda friendly tab in the sidebar. Now the work begins.

Now this is the old 3.1 alpha version of fbb so sometimes it comes up to a blank page. If you hit refresh it should come up fine.

I agree this would be a great thing. I will dig a little deeper and look at what's involved to make it work. My guess is their price is so high because they have to figure out the forums structure etc.... I would think it would NOT take 2k to 4k of my time to figure out. I'll know more when I dig in and see how easy their API might be.

Here are a couple more.
The search screen
I have more almost finished but I am having issues with a couple of things. Mainly the showtopic screen looks fine but if there is a picture in one of the posts, it enlarges the screen because it inserts a medium sized image and when the screen automatically adjusts, the fonts, menu, etc get really small. You can't see the pic in this post but it is down further on the page.
A couple more issues I have is the same thing with a quote box and when viewing an article forum, you can see the replies but not the original article.

Well hopefully Josh can do something with the tapatalk. It has come to my attention that the managefiles page will not let someone upload a photo or a file from either an iphone or a droid although I can from my blackberry. If that is the case then small screen templates are almost useless if your forum depends heavily on pictures.
