 Groups: Setting Up Groups
Article [FusionBB Versions: All]

FusionBB gives you a wide variety of options for groups that manage the forums on your site.

First, a brief description of the five basic groups.

(Do Not Change these except for changing their descriptions. These must remain in this order for the board to function properly.)

No one person should be a member of more than one of those groups.

  • Administrators - This group of members has access to the whole board and can moderate ANY forum

  • Super Moderators - This group of members has access to the whole board minus some admin only rights and can moderate ANY forum.

  • Moderators - This group of Members are Moderators of particular Forums that you have set for them to moderate and are treated as Users everywhere else (in earlier versions this was not so, they were moderators EVERYWHERE)

  • Users - This group of Members are the bulk of your forum.

  • Guests - This is the Anonymous users group

Remember that you can always see what permissions a group has by looking at the Overviews.

Q: What if I have a forum set up so that one of those groups cannot access it, but I want to give member Y who is in one of the first four to have access?

Here is where you ADD a new group for that forum and ADD the user you want to give access to that group as well.

For instance let's say you have Forum A which has the following permissions:

Can See:
Admins
Supermoderators
Moderators
Users

Can Post:
Admins
Supermoderators
Moderators

You will see that everyone in the first four groups can see it but Users cannot post to that forum.

Now you have a special user who you want to give the permission to post in it who is in the Users Group.

Create a New Group and ADD those special members into that group and then set up that forum to give that Group Posting Permission as well.

Notice that you should ADD to the new group NOT REMOVE from old and place into New. Members should remain in one of those four basic groups.

Now Forum A's permissions will look like this:

Can See:
Admins
Supermoderators
Moderators
Users
New Group

Can Post:
Admins
Supermoderators
Moderators
New Group

Q: I have a special forum that only I should have access to see and post in: for my Special Thoughts.

Set the Forum up as:

Can See:
New Group

Can Post:
New Group

And add ONLY yourself to that New Group. Give that new Group any permissions you think you should have.

Q: How do I limit whether a Moderator can Merge, Move, or Delete in ANY forum whether they are assigned to it or not?

This is located in the following section of the AdminCP :

Admin >> Forums >> Moderator Forum Permissions

MAKE SURE TO SETUP ASSIGNED AND UNASSIGNED PRIVELEGES.

Set the permissions. If selected, those permissions are only granted to those Moderators assigned to the forum. If not selected then they are granted to all Moderators irregardless of whether they are assigned to the forum or not. Unassigned priveleges should basically be the same as what the User group has gotten.

Q: How do I make it so that other groups can access the Admin Panel to do special functions like manage members, etc?

First of all you have to setup the Control Panel Permissions you wish to give to that Group. These are things like Can Edit Language Files, Can Manage Skins, Can Manage Members, etc.

Lastly and most importantly you need to go into Site Permissions and also give that group permission to Can access the control panel or they will not see the Admin Panel Link under My Fusion.
